Trakai Castle
This castle is located somewhat 30 kilometers from Vilnius, on an island. The castle has been recently renovated and turned to a museum.
The first castle was built in Old Trakai. The Island and Peninsula castles, built in the 14th century, a period of war with the crusaders, were fortified at the turn of the l5th century. Little by little, Old Trakai lost its significance and the castle, left in ruins by the crusaders, was neglected and left to decay. Trakai flourished again only in the l5th century, its "Golden Age". Later it was eclipsed by nearby Vilnius. Trakai was destroyed in 1655 during the war with the State of Moscow. It suffered greatly during later wars and years of violence and the town deteriorated. It started its slow recovery only in the 19th century.
